II.1.4) Trumpas aprašymas:
The objective of this comprehensive study is to methodically examine the issue of fatigue among seafarers working in various functions and capacities on ferries operating between ports of an EU Member State, between EU Member States and ports between EU and non-EU countries. Recognizing the central role of maritime safety, this research will examine how fatigue, influenced by different working rosters, impacts the well-being, performance, and safety of seafarers. Fatigue among seafarers not only poses a significant threat to their health and safety but also expose the safe operation of ferries, possibly leading to maritime accidents. This study should adopt a holistic approach, considering all elements that contribute to seafarers' fatigue, such as long working hours, insufficient rest periods, irregular shift patterns, and the demanding nature of work onboard on the ship. The primary focus, however, will be on the impact of working rosters on the fatigue levels of seafarers. By analyzing different roster schedules, including those with varying lengths and frequencies of shifts, the study should aim at to identifying patterns and correlations between specific roster configurations and the incidence of fatigue-related symptoms among crew members. The study should integrate biomedical measurements tools to assess the fatigue if possible. The goal of this study is to provide evidence-based insights that can feed policy initiatives, promoting enhanced seafarer well-being and ensure the highest standards of maritime safety. Through these efforts, the study should aim to contribute to a safer and healthier working environment for seafarers on ferries and keep the maritime transport safe.
