1. ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope (39m diameter) under construction by ESO (https://elt.eso.org/) at Cerro Armazones in Chile. ELT is considered worldwide to be one of the highest priorities in ground based astronomy. MORFEO (http://wwwmaory.oabo.inaf.it/), as a first generation ELT instrument, will help compensate for the distortion of light caused by turbulence in the Earth’s atmosphere. MORFEO is a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) module that will allow spatially uniform adaptive optics compensation over a large field of view (about 1 arcmin2) with high sky coverage. Wavefront sensing is performed by six Laser Guide Stars (LGS) and three Natural Guide Stars (NGS), for the measurement of high and low-order wavefront perturbations respectively. Finally, the wavefront error compensation is performed by two adaptive post focal Deformable Mirrors (DMs) located inside MORFEO (the core of the instrument), which work together with the telescope’s adaptive and tip-tilt mirrors M4 and M5 respectively. The overall optical path will consist of several 1m class optical elements: 6 flat folding mirrors, one corrective plate, two aspherical mirrors, a large dichroic filter, a refractive objective and 2 deformable mirrors (DMs). All the optical elements are hosted by the Main Support structure (see following definition) except the last one (M12M) that bends the light into the client instrument (called MICADO), which is supported by MICADO.
MORFEO is being designed and built by a consortium of partners in Italy, France, Ireland, Canada and Japan together with ESO. INAF, as the leading institute, is responsible for all the major procurements.
2. The project has completed the Preliminary Design Phase and is in the Final Design Phase. The final design and the manufacturing of some components will be assigned to external companies. In particular, the MORFEO Consortium would like to inform all the industries concerned that a number of international public calls for tender are in publication and selection phase concerning the final design. In particular, this preliminary information note describes general requirements and conditions for the final design and the manufacturing of the Main Structure and handling tools for MORFEO.
3.The call for tender for Main Structure (MS) and AIV tools will be placed in the framework of the general technical specifications available at the link

The manufacturer is free to propose their own Main Structure Subsystem design, which may be completely different from the consortium one, a variation of it, or the consortium design itself. In any case, the manufacturer shall ensure performance of the system and the design itself shall be discussed with, and accepted by, the consortium
