Vlaanderen beschermt zich tegen wateroverlast met ruim 200 pompgemalen, merendeels verouderd. Ongeveer een kwart daarvan gebruikt vijzels, gewaardeerd om hun betrouwbaarheid, efficiëntie en visvriendelijkheid — een groeiende prioriteit binnen beleid en regelgeving. De buisvijzel scoort op papier nog beter qua energieverbruik en visveiligheid, maar wordt in Vlaanderen nauwelijks toegepast door praktische uitdagingen. Versnipperd beheer en onvoldoende validatie in de markt belemmeren tot nog toe echter de uitrol van de buisvijzel bij die renovaties. Om dit toch te stimuleren en meer kennis over de buisvijzels te verwerven, wil het Departement Mobiliteit en Openbare Werken samen met de Provincie West-Vlaanderen en Westkustpolder een buisvijzel laten modelleren en testen op een schaalmodel. Vervolgens willen ze de buisvijzel installeren en effectief testen in een bestaand vijzelgemaal. Fabrikanten optimaliseren het ontwerp met CFD-modellering en schaalmodellen, ondersteund door NeXperta (afdeling Expertise Beton en Staal en het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium). De testresultaten verfijnen de empirische formules en bepalen of buisvijzels een geschikt alternatief zijn voor de vervanging van bestaande vijzels. Het project wordt ondersteund door het Programma Innovatieve Overheidsopdrachten. Ter voorbereiding van de opmaak van een bestek voor de begeleiding van dit traject, wil de Vlaamse overheid de interesse bij de marktpartijen bevragen. Flanders protects itself against flooding with over 200 pumping stations, most of which are outdated. About a quarter of these use screw pumps, valued for their reliability, efficiency, and fish-friendliness — a growing priority within policy and regulations. On paper, the tubular screw pump scores even better in terms of energy consumption and fish safety, but it is hardly used in Flanders due to practical challenges. Fragmented management and insufficient market validation have so far hindered the rollout of the tubular screw pump in these renovations. To stimulate this and gain more knowledge about tubular screw pumps, the Department of Mobility and Public Works, together with the Province of West Flanders and Westkustpolder, wants to model and test a tubular screw pump on a scale model. Subsequently, they want to install and effectively test the tubular screw pump in an existing screw pump station. Manufacturers optimize the design with CFD modeling and scale models, supported by NeXperta (Concrete and Steel Expertise Department and Flanders Hydraulics). The test results refine the empirical formulas and determine whether tubular screw pumps are a suitable alternative for replacing existing screw pumps.
