The "Sustainable Energy Programme in Senegal" (PED II) is technical cooperation project of the Senegalese Ministry of Petroleum and Energies (MPE), financed by BMZ and implemented by GIZ. The amount of the project is to EUR 11,600,000 and is running from 01/2022 until 12/2025. The main implementation partners are the Agency for the Economy and Energy Management (AEME), the National Renewable Energy Agency (ANER), the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER), the Electricity Sector Regulatory Commission (CRSE) and the National Electricity Company (SENELEC). The objective of the Module is to "strengthen the Senegal's Ministry of Energy"s capacity to reform in order to promote sustainable and climate-friendly energy sources". The project contributes to Senegal's roadmap for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda SDGs, in particular SDG 7 (access to energy), 9 (industrialisation) and 13 (combating climate change) and the German support to reach the objectives of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-P) signed between Senegal and the G7 in June 2023. The target groups of the project are the households and businesses in Senegal not yet supplied with electricity (55% of the country's 16 million inhabitants), public and private players in the Senegalese energy sector acting as intermediaries. The project" approach lies on strengthening at national level the capacities of the Ministry of Energy and other stakeholders to steer the implementation of an energy policy aimed at decarbonisation. In addition, the profitability of renewable energies in rural electrification and in the electricity mix is promoted, among other things, by the productive use of Renewable Energies (RE). Promotion of energy efficiency will also be supported. The expected results of the project are: 1. The instruments for steering the implementation of the national energy strategy aimed at low-carbon socio-economic development that is resilient to climate change - decarbonization - are increasingly available. 2. The capacities of public and private players to promote the sustainability of rural electrification are strengthened. 3. Economically and employment-oriented solutions for the productive use of renewable energies are increasingly available. 4. The capacity of public players to promote energy efficiency is strengthened as part of a sustainable, climate-friendly energy policy. 5. Instruments are available to public and private players to leverage the policy framework to accelerate the expansion of grid-connected renewable energies as part of the Just Energy Transition.
